Apprentices learn from, hands on experience, and how to to identify and select the proper tool for a particular task. They must demonstrate safe practices when using hand and power tools. Apprentices learn the principles of construction for the following structures: foundations, steel and concrete building frames, roof trusses, plate girders, flat slabs, retaining walls, masonry arches, rigid frames, and steel bridges. We measure the apprentice hand-eye coordination and hand-tool dexterity. Apprentices must be able to pass a physical capacity exam which includes lifting between 40 and 70 lbs. They must be able to withstand frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and climbing. Successful completion of our testing demonstrates the apprentice has the physical capacity to perform the job and has acquired the knowledge and skills they need, to follow specifications, for their work scope.e and skills they need, to follow specifications, for their work scope.
Apprentices work on construction crews and learn from Master-Journeymen as instructors who teach and develop our apprentices in the basic trade skills that are necessary to succeed in the field of General Construction. Our journeymen-instructors are professional master-craftsmen whose incomparable experience and knowledge is passed on to our apprentices through direct training. From a combination of classroom learning and hands-on training, under the direct guidance of experienced, master-tradesmen, apprentices will gain invaluable “real-life” knowledge, that will prepare them for any challenges they might encounter on the job site.
MENTORSHIP
Throughout their education our Apprentices are mentored, encouraged, and guided in the principles of Building Construction to help them excel in their trade. During their Trade Related Classroom instruction, they are taught through best practices, basic communication, skill training, technical knowledge, as well as hands-on experience. Our mentorship approach raises the educational standards, enhances the learning experience, and increases employability.
